This summer brings the 19th annual RAMROD bicycle ride, sponsored by the Redmond Cycling Club of Washington. This year, 728 registered entrants will tackle this 155-mile loop around Mount Rainier. With 10,000 total feet of climbing, this challenging course winds through spectacular mountain scenery in Mt. Rainier National Park.
Riders enter at the Park's Nisqually Entrance 61 miles into the ride, and then shortly begin the 12-mile ascent to Paradise Park on the southern slope of Mt. Rainier. At 5420 feet, Paradise is the highest point on the course. From there, riders descend through Stevens Canyon, then continue up over Backbone Ridge. The swooping five-mile descent from Backbone Ridge takes riders to the Grove of the Patriarchs, a magnificent lowland forest of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and western red cedar. The final major ascent, over Cayuse Pass (4694 feet), comes over 100 miles into the ride. Riders finish back where they started at the Enumclaw WA fairgrounds, with the exhilaration of accomplishment and a day in the great outdoors as their reward. |
