Running Chart/Offshore Navigator in a corporate/restricted environment using Windows XP

DISCUSSION

Introduction:
Chart/Offshore Navigator is a "legacy application" as defined by Microsoft. It was designed in an era when applications did not have to worry about permissions, file storage conventions, etc. While Chart/Offshore Navigator will work properly in Windows XP, the user must be given certain privileges during the installation process, and maintain other privileges in order to operate the software.

The quick solution:
Add the user to the 'Administrators' Group on their machine. This can be done via the 'User Accounts' section of the Control Panel. The software will install and run properly without problems.

The more complex solution:
It is not always desirable to allow a user to have Administrator access to their machine.

Installation: Temporarily add the user who wishes to access Chart/Offshore Navigator to the 'Administrator' Group (via the 'User Accounts' section of the Control Panel.) Install the software and run it - ensuring the software starts normally without any error messages. If more than one user needs access to Chart/Offshore Navigator on this machine, repeat this process for each user. Once the installation is complete (and the software is verified) put the user into the 'Power User' Group.

Operation: In Windows XP, 'Power Users' have more access rights than 'Restricted Users', however, they still lack many privileges reserved for 'Administrators'. Yet, there are some files that Chart/Offshore Navigator needs access to, which even 'Power Users' can not modify.

Log into the machine as 'Administrator' (or as someone who is listed in the 'Administrator' Group.) Then, assuming a default Windows installation structure, locate the following files:
C:\lic_log.txt
C:\WINDOWS\Contour.ini
C:\WINDOWS\Contour.cht
C:\WINDOWS\Contour.lf

Right-click on each of these files and select 'Properties'. In the 'Security' tab, select the user that needs access to Chart/Offshore Navigator. Then allow 'Full Control' to this file (for the selected user.) Repeat this for any additional users that need access to Chart/Offshore Navigator, and then repeat the process for each of the files listed above.

Next, 'Full Control' must be given to each of the following directories (and their children.)
C:\3DChartsC:\ChartKit
To grant Full Control to a directory, log in as Administrator and locate each directory. (Note: the above directory paths assume default installation locations.) Right click on the directory folder and select 'Properties.' In the 'Security' tab, select the user that needs access to Chart/Offshore Navigator. Then allow 'Full Control' to this directory (for the selected user.) Next, press 'Advanced' and check on the option to 'Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects.' Apply and OK all changes. Finally, repeat this for any additional users that need access to Chart/Offshore Navigator, and then repeat the process for each of the directories listed above.

Log back into the users' account and verify that Chart/Offshore Navigator starts normally without any error messages.

What if I must put the user in the 'Restricted Users' Group?
If it is the policy of your corporate environment to only allow 'Restricted Users', you will be unable to run almost any 'legacy' Windows application. However, Chart/Offshore Navigator will run, even when the user is in the 'Restricted Users' Group, provided that the above steps are followed for 'Power Users' and 'Full Control' is given to the following additional directory (and its children.)
C:\Program Files\Maptech
To grant Full Control to a directory, log in as Administrator and locate each directory. (Note: the above directory paths assume default installation locations.) Right click on the directory folder and select 'Properties.' In the 'Security' tab, select the user that needs access to Chart/Offshore Navigator. Then allow 'Full Control' to this directory (for the selected user.) Next, press 'Advanced' and check on the option to 'Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects.' Apply and OK all changes. Finally, repeat this for any additional users that need access to Chart/Offshore Navigator.

Log back into the users' account and verify that Chart/Offshore Navigator starts normally without any error messages.
