Compatibility with 'Graphic' chart types.

DISCUSSION

Introduction
As part of its contractual obligations, Maptech must produce an exact digital replica of each paper chart produced by NOAA. Most charts contain at least some navigable portion. There are, however, whole portions of some paper charts that contain only text - such as a cover sheet, chart notes, or weather information. These chart files are known as 'Graphic' charts - and contain no navigable portion.

It was determined that versions prior to 8.3.17 of The CAPN behaves erratically when it encounters one of these Graphic charts. Sometimes, a entire directory (or CD) of Maptech BSB charts will be ignored. In other cases, The CAPN may terminate unexpectedly when trying to open or copy one of these charts. To correct this issue, download and install the latest release of The CAPN.

If it is not practical to download this fix, you may use the following procedures to ignore these charts Graphic so to allow viewing of navigation charts included on Maptech BSB CDs and DVDs. However, since we have made many improvements to The CAPN, we strongly recommend that you download the latest version to correct this and other compatibility issues.

To Copy Charts to the Hard Drive
The copy charts function in The CAPN is not compatible with any Maptech BSB CD that contains a Graphic Chart. (See the list below of regions that contain these charts.) When The CAPN encounters a Graphic chart during the chart copy process, it usually will exit with a '32-bit error.'

To copy charts to the hard drive, we recommend running the 'Installer' CD that accompanies each Maptech Chart Region. This process will register the CD for use (if required) and prompt you to install the CD to the hard drive.

Advanced users can 'browse' the CD (after the registration has taken place) and copy the charts from the BSBCHART folder on the CD to the BSBCHART folder on their hard drive.

Regardless of the method used, once copied, the Graphic charts will need to be deleted.

To Delete Graphic Charts
1. Open 'My Computer' then 'Local Disk C' and then the folder your charts are kept in. If you used the Maptech 'Installer' CD to copy these charts, they will most likely be in the folder C:\ChartKit\BSBChart\.

2. Using the list below, locate any chart file that matches the numbers. Chart files have 'extensions' of either .CAP or .KAP (depending on the version of the chart's format.) For example, a customer with a Region 7, 4.2 Edition BSB Chart CD will have two Graphic charts: 11451_16.CAP and 11451_17.CAP. Click on one of these two files and delete it. Repeat this process for every Graphic BSB Chart found in your chart folder.

3. Start The CAPN and choose 'Get a Chart' from the File menu. If all your BSB charts appear - and seem to load properly, you should have no further difficulties. If the charts remain missing, or the application terminates when attempting to open one of these charts, review the list of chart paths displayed in 'Set or Refresh Chart Paths' (also found in the File menu.) Here, make note of each path used to keep charts, then check each of these folders on your hard disk to ensure that it does not contain any of the Graphic Chart Files listed below.
