Just installed this device on my laptop (Win XP) and it was an easy install. CNP recognized the GPS upon loading and we were off to the races. The OEM version was about $70 including shipping but it comes without software or manual. Also, this is an automotive GPS so you want to protect it from the marine elements. We're using it in a pilot house application.

You need to download the USB drivers from http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=593 and you'll also want to download the Garmin software updater from: http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00321-00

Load the USB drivers before plugging in the USB GPS device. Windows will recognize the GPS and you may have to tell the win install program where the Garmin USB drivers are located. After installing the GPS its a good idea to run the web updater and let it load the most up-to-date software into the GPS receiver.

Is this just an FYI, or are you having trouble setting up your GPS with Chart Navigator Pro?

I know that this is a late reply but I j jst installed a Garmin GPS 18 on my laptop with Win XP, also. I've only used it twice but each time Chart Navigator has suddenly crashed--not frozen, mind you, it disappeared as if it had been automatically shut off. Each time I was able to start it up again, only to have it crash again in a few minutes. I did download and install the newest version (5.08 if I recall correctly).

Anybody have any thoughts?

I have had Ken make sure his Garmin 18 USB driver is installed properly.
I have had him uninstall Offshore, and reinstall.

He was still having the same issue.
He has since acquired a new Installer disc and is going to re download a new driver from Garmin.

He will be reporting back with the results.

The results are in.
He installed the new 5.08 this weekend (after uninstalling the old 5.08), ran the patch, uninstalled and installed the Garmin driver.
He was then able to run the program and it did not crash at all.
