Electronics Hookup and Configuration
Garmin GPSMAP 2006/2010
The Garmin 2006/2010 can supply Chart Navigator Pro with a GPS fix as well as depth, water speed, and water temperature information. It is also compatible with the route and waypoint transfer feature. However, due to limitations of the 2006/2010, the same port configuration cannot be used for both depth/water speed/water temperature operation and route/waypoint transfer operation. The depth/water speed/water temperature information is only sent by the 2006/2010 when the port is configured for the NMEA 0183 Serial Data Format and waypoint/route transfers are only enabled when the port is configured for Garmin Data Transfers.
The Garmin 2006/2010 has two ports labeled "Port 1" and "Port 2". Port 1 is designed for direct connection to a PC or another Garmin 2006/2010 and Port 2 is designed for connected to other NMEA 0183 equipment. The electrical interfaces of both ports is the same, but Port 1 can be set to use either the NMEA 0183 protocol or the Garmin Data Transfer Protocol. The Garmin Data Transfer Protocol must be used for transferring routes and waypoints to and from the 2006/2010 so we recommend connecting the PC to that port. The blue wire on the 2006/2010 should be connected to pin 2 of the 9-pin PC serial port connector, the brown wire should be connected to pin 3, and the black wire should be connected to pin 5. For more information, see the Garmin 2006/2010 Installation Guide.
Route and Waypoint Transfers
- Make sure the Serial Data Format is set to "Garmin Data Transfer"
- Make sure the Transfer Mode on the Garmin is set to "Host".
For more information, see page 76 of the Garmin 2006/2010 Owner's Manual.
Note: When the Serial Data Format is set to "Garmin Data Transfer" the 2006/2010 will not send depth, water speed, or water temperature information to the port so Chart Navigator Pro features that rely on that data will not function. GPS fix information is still sent in Garmin Data Transfer mode, however.
Selecting the right Advanced NMEA Output Setup options
The Garmin 2006/2010 provides several advanced options that control how NMEA 0183 data is sent to the ports:
GPS Status (GSA, GSV)
This option must be On for the GPS Status Panel in Chart Navigator Pro to function.
Waypoint/Route (WPL, RTE)
Chart Navigator Pro will not use this information, so the setting may be On or Off
Chart Navigator Pro does not use this information, so the setting may be On or Off.
Lat/Lon Minutes Precision
Chart Navigator Pro will use all the precision it can get, so set this to the maximum number of digits for more accurate positioning on the chart.
