Introduction
Connecting a GPS to a PC navigation software product can sometimes be a laborious process. Fortunately, we've included a GPS Auto-Detection routine within The CAPN to streamline this process. However, if difficulties persist, or if a more complex configuration is required, an advanced setup procedure and troubleshooting steps are also available.

Automatic Configuration: "Click Here To Find GPS"
The fastest and easiest way to get The CAPN properly configured for your GPS is to click the Find GPS button on the left side of the chart display window:

(If this button does not appear, choose Find GPS Data from the Options menu.)

Connect the GPS to your computer (using a USB-to-Serial Adapter if necessary.) Then, on the GPS Check List that appears, press the Find GPS button. This will search your connections for the GPS and configure The CAPN to use the GPS to provide position information on its display. To activate the moving chart display, check on Keep Ship In View from the Navigation menu.

Manual Configuration
To manually configure The CAPN to communicate with the GPS, close The CAPN application. Next, open My Computer (or simply Computer in Windows Vista) and open Local Disk (C:), and the folder labeled Capn Voyager. Now, locate and double-click the Configuration Settings file labeled GPS (or GPS.INI) - it will appear as a Notepad.

The following screen should open:

Move the cursor to Port= and type the number of the COM port the GPS (or USB-to-serial adapter) is connected to. For Baud=, type 4800 (unless your GPS is communicating at a different Baud rate) and ensure Handshaking= is set to 0.

Next, choose Save from the File menu, and close the GPS.INI Notepad. Start The CAPN and choose Find GPS Data from the Options menu and The CAPN will use the GPS to provide position information on its display. To activate the moving chart display, check on Keep Ship In View from the Navigation menu.
