TOPIC

For Importing NorthStar 96Xexprt.txt and Maptech .MXF files into SeaRay and i3 Navigation Computers

DOWNLOADS
Introduction
DataImport is a utility designed to convert waypoints found in NorthStar '96Xexprt.txt' files or Maptech (Terrain Navigator, Offshore Navigator, and Chart Navigator Pro) MXF files into Markers for use within Maptech Sea Ray/i3 Navigation Computers.

This utility works in conjunction with the 'Home Planning Edition' of Sea Ray/i3 Navigator. This is required to transfer the converted Markers to the vessel. This can only be accomplished via the Thumb Drive included with the Home Planning Edition.

BETA SOFTWARE
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS APPLICATION IS "BETA" SOFTWARE WHICH MEANS THAT IT HAS NOT GONE THROUGH THE USUAL RIGOROUS TESTING PROCEEDURES THAT MAPTECH USES FOR OFFICIAL RELEASES OF ITS SOFTWARE. We are pleased to make this utility available to our customers, while development and testing continues on the next release of our navigation products.

Because of the 'beta' status of this utility, Maptech can only offer limited technical support on its use and functionality. Likewise, please let us know if you have any difficulties with this application, so that it may be corrected.

NorthStar 96XEXPRT.TXT
Included with the NorthStar PC interface cable is a software product that will read the waypoints and routes from the GPS/Chartplotter and save/export them into the file 96Xexprt.txt. Please consult the documentation that accompanied the software for additional information.

96XEXPRT.TXT Files
This utility was tested with 'VERSION 1' 96Xexprt.txt files. It may or may not function with newer versions. It is also only designed to work with LATITUDE_FORMAT XXDXX.XXX'X and LONGITUDE_FORMAT XXXDXX.XXX'X. Other formats will not work.

If additional versions and formats are required, please contact Maptech technical support with a sample data file. We will attempt to add support for these conversions as time and resources permit.

Doing A Conversion
Once the 96Xexprt.txt file has been created, open the DataImport application. An open window will appear - browse to and open to the 96Xexprt.txt file that was created by the NorthStar software.

If you have not done so already, when prompted please insert the Thumb Drive that is included with your Home Planning software. Note that non-Maptech thumb drives can not be used for data transfer to the vessel Navigation Computer.

Once the thumb drive is inserted, the conversion process will take place. Any waypoints found in the 96Xexprt.txt will be merged with those already present on the thumb drive, as well as any present within the Home Planning Edition that may be installed on that desktop PC.

At the completion of the conversion, you may remove the thumb drive and bring it to the vessel's Navigation Computer. Insert the thumb drive BEFORE starting the Chart Plotting screen of the Navigator, and the waypoints on the thumb drive will be added to the Vessel.

MAPTECH TERRAIN .MXF FILES
Because of its simplicity, Maptech's .MXF Marker files (originally designed for use with Terrain Navigator) have become a standard mechanism for transferring data between Maptech's family of applications. In fact, almost every Maptech product can read .MXF files and a host of utilities for creating .MXF files are available from Maptech.com.

.MXF Files
For detailed information regarding the .MXF file format, please visit the support section for Terrain Navigator at www.maptech.com.

Doing A Conversion
First, save the .MXF file from the Maptech application. Typically, this involves Exporting the Markers or Waypoints and selecting the Terrain Navigator .MXF format. Please consult the documentation that accompanied your Maptech Navigation software product for more details.

Once the .MXF file has been created, open the DataImport application. An open window will appear - change 'Files of Type' to 'Maptech Marker Files' then browse to and open to the .MXF file that was created by the Maptech software.

If you have not done so already, when prompted please insert the Thumb Drive that is included with your Home Planning software. Note that non-Maptech thumb drives can not be used for data transfer to the vessel's Navigation Computer.

Once the thumb drive is inserted, the conversion process will take place. Any waypoints found in the Marker .MXF file will be merged with those already present on the thumb drive, as well as any present within the Home Planning Edition that may be installed on that desktop PC.

At the completion of the conversion, you may remove the thumb drive and bring it to the vessel's Navigation Computer. Insert the thumb drive BEFORE starting the Chart Plotting screen of the Navigator, and the waypoints on the thumb drive will be added to the Vessel.

Notes
Route import is NOT supported at this time. All waypoints will be imported as MARKS in the Navigator software. Routes can be recreated by using these Markers as waypoints.

If a waypoint being imported shares the exact same position as a waypoint that already exists, the new waypoint will be ignored.

If a waypoint being imported shares the exact same name (but different position) as a waypoint that already exists, the name will be modified with '001', '002', etc. to differentiate between the waypoints.

Technical Support
Maptech created this utility based on customer requests. Although we are happy to provide it free to our customers, we cannot provide unlimited support for its use.

How To Install
Click the link below. In most instances, your web browser will ask if the file should be Opened, or Saved to your computer. Choose Save, then select a location to Save the downloaded file In. If you are unfamiliar with downloading software from the Internet, we recommend choosing your "Desktop"; select Save In, Desktop and press Save. Once the download completes, double-click the SetupDataImport application that appears on your Desktop. This will install the utility onto this computer. Once that process is completed, you may run the SeaRay and i3 Data Import Utility from the Windows Start menu, and delete the download from your Desktop.

Please note: Do NOT save this download in the same directory as your Home Planning Edition. Doing so will corrupt your installation, requiring a complete re-install to correct.
